Night or evening games: Go for a 42mm or even 50mm objective lens. These let in more light, giving you a brighter, clearer image under stadium lights.
Day games or kids’ sport: Something like an 8×30 is ideal—lighter, more compact, and still plenty powerful.
Keep in mind: as lens size increases, so does weight, size, and price. A 50mm pair will perform brilliantly in low light—but you’ll feel it around your neck (and in your wallet).
Different Sports, Different Needs

AFL: 10x works perfectly. You get great reach, and the pace of play still allows you to track the action comfortably.
Horse or greyhound racing: These are much faster. A 7x or 8x magnification can actually be better, giving you a wider field of view so you don’t lose the action.
Sideline sports: Lower magnification (like 8x) keeps things steady and easy to follow, especially at closer distances.
The Trade-Off (There’s Always One)
Like most things, choosing binoculars comes down to balance:
More magnification = more reach, but less stability
Larger lenses = brighter image, but more weight and cost
Compact designs = easier to carry, but slightly less performance
